Who is My President?

Electing our next president is an emotional choice. It has never been an intellectual one and it never will be. It is apparent now than ever before. Maybe the Filipino spirit of goodwill and religiosity comes above all other attributes, good and bad. Or has the time come in the point of our history to make a change that will truly mean something, that will result in a true change for the better?

The majority of the Filipino voters have always been predominantly complaisant, uninformed, ill-advised, misguided, and base most of their decisions upon the opinions of others. This is being capitalized by politicians who know how to play to the voter's sentiments. Nary has an iota of doubt come from the mouths of those who hunger power so much that they will say anything to get elected. The promises of prosperity, of emancipation from poverty! Indeed so the campaign jingles claim.

The only promise I am looking forward to this election is that of HOPE. Hope for a start of true change for the better. But alas, not even a good president, nor can a good government make changes. It will still be up to us, individually as human beings, as Filipinos, to start that change within us. Be more aware; try to see our surroundings with fresh eyes. Do not be content with what we have just because we have comfortable lives. Do not stand for a quality of life that is now ours while government has a way to lift us out of poverty. Do our little changes from within. Restore good morals, etiquette, courtesy, cleanliness, discipline and common decency. Learn how to truly communicate, interact and respect others. This will not cost us anything. It will take very little effort when we get used to it.

Having lived in our great tropical climate all our lives has spoiled us to believing we have little or no problems. Beggars and the syndicate handling them have it good in the sense that they do not have winters to contend with. Think of it. If we had winters how many would survive without food and shelter. In our world, street children ply the street half naked, bare feet and dirty, but aside from the time they are knocking on your car windows, they are still able to laugh and play. Some can even afford a bag of solvent every now and then as luxury.

Complaisance is sadly with us, lulls us into thinking we are okay. It gives the corrupt the fuel to drive their ambitions and get their way with us. To take advantage of our weakness, knowing that in general, we are content and weak in our conviction to better ourselves and are easily swayed by mass media and popular gossip.

But this time I feel something different will happen in this 2010 presidential election. It's just a feeling. I don't know if I'm alone in this but this time I feel Hope. Noynoy Aquino may not be the ideal leader our country needs. But who else is there? At least Noynoy Aquino symbolizes the one thing our country needs right now. HOPE.

Think of it and ask ourselves this question: What have we got to lose? The choice is simple. Stay with mainstream politics and suffer what we have been used to suffer all along? Or chose a small glimmer of hope and give ourselves a chance to really improve our lives? My Decision is made. May God help us in the days to come...
